With up to 70% of its content consisting of soluble fiber, psyllium is a great ally in fighting constipation. Once it gets through the large intestine, it transforms into a mucilaginous gel and increases its volume 10-fold, bulking the stools and stimulating their elimination.
Depending on the severity of constipation, it may be necessary to repeat the treatment for two or three days. It is also worth keeping in mind that consuming too much fiber can cause diarrhea or worsen constipation. As such, moderation is recommended.
