It is estimated that almost half of the world's population is overweight and that 20% are considered obese.1 Since carrying excess weight increases the risk of health conditions like diabetes and heart disease, working to reduce body fat can improve long-term health outcomes.
Persimmon, a fruit rich in fiber and polyphenols, has been studied in animals for its potential effects on fat metabolism and inflammation, but clinical evidence in humans has been limited. A 2024 Spanish clinical trial investigated the effects of persimmon extract on body composition among adults with an elevated body mass index (BMI).
The Study
The trial enrolled 71 adults aged 18-65 with BMI between 25 and 34.99 (categorized as overweight or obese). Participants were randomly assigned to receive either a placebo or 400 mg daily of a standardized persimmon extract for 120 days.
Importantly, they were asked not to alter their usual diets or activity levels, ensuring any effects could be attributed to the supplement itself. Researchers assessed participants' body composition, self-reported quality of life, and blood markers of lipids, glucose, inflammation, and antioxidant capacity.
The Results
In overweight participants, those receiving persimmon extract showed significant reductions in fat mass (both total and trunk fat), body weight, BMI, waist circumference, and abdominal circumference compared with placebo. These improvements were apparent by the mid-study evaluation at 60 days. Importantly, lean mass remained unchanged, indicating that fat loss occurred without loss of muscle.
Treatment didn't seem to affect lipid or glucose levels. However, inflammation and oxidative stress markers improved in the persimmon group. Participants with initially low fecal fat excretion also showed higher fat excretion, suggesting persimmon extract may help reduce fat absorption.
Quality-of-life outcomes showed modest benefits, with participants in the persimmon group reporting greater improvements in overall well-being and mental health scores compared with placebo. The supplement was safe and well tolerated, with no adverse effects reported.
What Does this Mean?
This clinical trial provides the first controlled evidence that persimmon fruit extract can improve body composition in overweight adults. It helped reduce fat mass and waist size while preserving muscle, suggesting it could support healthy weight management. The extract also showed anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, highlighting its active compounds.
While the results are encouraging, more studies are needed to confirm these benefits. Other plant-based foods rich in polyphenols, such as green tea, blueberries, and cacao, have demonstrated similar antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.
