Very little research is available to explain the allergic reactions to kiwi in depth, but one study published in Clinical & Experimental Allergy (2004) surveyed 273 individuals with previous experience of kiwi allergic reactions. Approximately 65% of the individuals reported that they experienced oral irritation as a result of kiwi consumption. A smaller percentage (18%) experienced more severe symptoms including wheezing, cyanosis (bluish discoloration of the skin and mucus), or collapse. The study concluded that kiwi can in fact be a significant food allergen, especially in young children.
