The information in this book was gathered through 12 years of ethnographical field research in the Andes Mountains of South America. The Kallawaya people of Bolivia are known throughout their native lands as healers. This book contains over 60 of the plants they use and their applications, accompanied by illustrations by Eleanor Forfang Stauffer.

About the Author

Dr. Joseph W. Bastien is an ethnographer and researcher who received his Ph.D. from Cornell University. He has written several books and articles on ethnomedicine and the indigenous peoples of Bolivia. For many years, he taught anthropology at the University of Texas Arlington, where he won numerous research awards.
