Food and Drug Administration

About the Site

The Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) website includes a great deal of in-depth information on manufacturing and hygiene standards, reports on medical trials, updates on food recalls, and special alerts. Although most of the information provided by the FDA is meant for medical practitioners or clinical researchers, they also keep special sections of consumer and patient-oriented information. In the latter, they make publicly available the procedures in which citizens can report side effects (Medwatch), special information pages on chronic illnesses and conditions, and reliable guides on patient's rights, drug approvals, and clinical trials.

About the Organization

The Food and Drug Administration is the U.S.'s federal agency in charge of supervising the safety standards of food, pharmaceutical products (both prescription-only and over-the-counter), dietary supplements, tobacco products, and cosmetics. Formed in 1906, they are a division of the Department of Health and Human Services, and are currently led by Commissioner Dr. Stephen Ostroff.
